The diamante (dee-ah-mahn-tay) pattern is a seven line contrast poem having a diamond shape. The pattern structure is as follows:

Walking, resting, farming Participle, Participle, Participle
Trees, barns, smog, skyscrapers Noun, Noun, Noun, Noun
Rushing, waiting, driving Participle, Participle, Participle

1st line: one noun for which you know a contrasting noun
2nd line: two adjectives which describe the subject
3rd line: three participles (-ing or -ed) which describe the subject
4th line: two nouns related to the subject and two nouns related to the opposite of the subject
5th line: three more participles (-ing or -ed words) which describe line four
6th line: two adjectives which describe the contrasting noun (the last word in line seven)
7th line: the final noun that is in contrast to the subject
